April Anderson

April Anderson-Collins, one part of the Anderson siblings that helped Eunice High rise to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, remains one of the most decorated female track athletes in the history of Eunice High School.

A three-year letterwinner, Anderson dominated St. Landry Parish during her time at Eunice High. She began running track as early as sixth grade and winning championships every year she ran.

When she arrived at Eunice High as a sophomore, Anderson’s dominance began immediately. She won parish and district titles in the 100-meter dash as a sophomore and also ran in some national meets.

She truly hit her stride as a junior in winning the parish, district and state titles in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints and posting the fastest time for any class at the 1987 state meet in the 200-meter sprint. She also finished 5th and 6th respectively in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints at the international level.

She repeated in the parish, district and region again and won the 100-meter and was the runner-up in the 200m as a senior. The Daily Advertiser named her Athlete of the Year and she was the outstanding female athlete at Eunice High.

Anderson went on to the college level at Southern University, where injuries unfortunately derailed her career.

She is now married to her high school sweetheart, Dwight Collins, and is continuing to impact young lives as an educator.
