Roy Jones, a 1985 All-State selection at offensive guard and a track letterman, personified toughness in the 1985 Rambo Squad Eunice football team that finished with a 13-1 record and was a Class 3A state semifinalist.
Jones, who teammates called the heart and soul of the team, brought a grit to the team that not many, if any, of his teammates could match.
He described himself as a kid who was rough around the edges and described football as his escape. When on the field, Jones insists that he was “just having fun” every time out.
Yet, having fun brought out a certain nastiness in Jones. He described football as a “four quarter dance” and loved the toughness in which the game was played with back then.
On top of football, he was also a decorated member of the track and field team where he threw shotput.
Jones is, to this day, arguably one of the greatest offensive and defensive linemen to ever walk the halls of Eunice High.
